You and our network of advocates have been tirelessly making calls, writing letters and emails, speaking with news outlets, and posting on social media–all in an effort to share what we know to be true. SNAP cuts will harm our neighbors facing hunger.

On July 4th, the current administration signed HR 1 into law. The votes in both the House and Senate were very close but, ultimately, the Budget Reconciliation Bill (HR 1) passed. Among the many provisions, there was one silver lining: the final legislation cut fewer SNAP dollars than previously estimated.

WE played a part in narrowing that gap.

Together, our voices helped uplift the needs of our neighbors in need. Specifically, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis broke party lines to vote ‘no’ on HR 1, stating, “We can and must do better than this.” Sen. Tillis heard directly from us, and that advocacy served a role in helping him see the negative impacts HR 1 would have on our communities.

Civic engagement is essential, and we saw progress because enough folks took a stand on this. We encourage you to continue to engage as we turn our sights to supporting our neighbors through uncertain times under this new budget.

This was one step in a longer journey. In the weeks ahead, we’ll break down what HR 1 means for SNAP, how it impacts families across the Carolinas, and what we can do next – together. Stay tuned.
