Agency provides:
  • food vouchers for Seniors (Farmers Market Vouchers/Checks)
The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) which is administered by SC DSS is a seasonal USDA grant program that provides participants with access to fresh, nutritious, unprocessed fruits and vegetables from local farmers’ markets and is designed to increase awareness and use of community markets. The program provides qualifying individuals with checks/vouchers that may be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at local authorized farmers’ markets. Seniors must apply for benefits each year.

The next program season will begin in Summer 2024.

Eligibility

  • Senior/Elderly
    • Age 60 and older on the date of application
  • Residency Requirements
    • A resident of one of the 46 participating counties
  • Low Income Individuals and Families
    • Must meet income eligibility requirements.
    • Applicants may self-declare their total household income (before taxes). 
    • Total household income cannot exceed 185% of the federal poverty income limit. 
      • A household is defined as a group of related or non-related individuals living together as one economic unit.

Application Process

  • Application Required
    • Applications will be completed IN-PERSON ONLY at approved or local senior-serving organizations (no online application this year).
  • Customized Process
    • Step 1 Attend a distribution event in your county of residence (view list on website)
    • Step 2 Complete the application in person at an approved location
    • Step 3 Once the application is approved, receive checks at the same location
    • Step 4 Purchase fresh fruits at an authorized location/farmers
      • A list of authorized farmers will be provided at pickup. Eligible participants will receive 5 SFMNP checks worth $10.00 each, for a total benefit of $50.00 that van be used at participating farmers' market to purchase fresh, locally grown produce

    • Applicants must self-declare annual gross income

    • Application must self-declare household size whether applying jointly or individually
